Composting Coffee Knock Box
The Coffee Knock Composting Bin is an original consumer product concept developed by client Chris Brooker in collaboration with JVG Product Design, commencing in May 2025. The product was born from the insight that espresso machine users lack a dedicated, purpose-built vessel that combines the functionality of a knock box with integrated composting — allowing spent coffee pucks to be knocked out and contained hygienically, ready for disposal or composting.
The design is a rectangular, lidded bin with a sloped lid profile, intended to sit neatly on a kitchen bench or under the sink for easy access. Key features of the product include:
Knock bar — a removable bar spanning the interior of the bin against which the portafilter is knocked to release spent pucks, with a TPU-wrapped sleeve and end caps for dampening and a clip-on assembly for ease of use
Angled lid — a sloped, fitted lid with a built-in circular sponge housing (held in place by an internal undercut lip rather than adhesive tape) that absorbs moisture and odour from the coffee grounds
Recessed side handle — integrated into the body for a clean aesthetic and easy lifting
Aeration features — knob and ventilation shapes on the lid to manage moisture build-up
Branding area — a rubber base rim designed to display a logo or QR code
The body is 3D printed in PLA with a smooth matte exterior and smooth interior walls, with a solid lower section for moisture retention and increased infill for added structural weight and durability. The target dimensions are approximately 16.5cm wide by 18.5cm deep. The product is designed with a future pathway to injection moulding for higher-volume production runs.
The project moved from initial concept and design proposal through 3D modelling, technical drawings, renders, and a first physical prototype — all within the space of a few weeks. Prototype testing informed a second round of design refinements, with the project actively progressing toward a market-ready product targeted at home baristas.
